NO TIME TO THINK. HE’D never seen weather like this before, but he wasn’t going to stay on the veranda and watch. The noise was enough to tell him he should be inside. Getting the front door closed once Charlie and Suzie were inside proved difficult. The flyscreen door swung dangerously, and he decided to leave it. He pushed the heavy wooden door closed and leaned against it, breathing heavily. His thoughts began to settle like a flock of galahs on a gum tree after recovering from a fright. Was everyone all right? But before he could answer the question, the front window next to him exploded with shattering glass. The dog yelped, Charlie screamed and he felt his heart lurch. Without stopping to analyze, he grabbed Charlie and pulled her behind the large couch, putting his arm over her head to protect from any flying debris. It only took a minute to realize that whatever had broken the front window was not going any further, and the sound of the wind had lessened though heavy rain now beat the roof. The wind seemed to be passing. Still, he didn’t move. He needed time to let his heart-rate decrease, and gather his thoughts.

It wasn’t until Charlie moved under him that he lifted his arm and sat back on the floor, leaning against the couch. He looked at Charlie. She was wide-eyed and pale and staring right back at him.

“How often do you get tornadoes?” Her tone was high pitched.

“I’ve never seen a storm like that.”

“Never? That was a tornado, wasn’t it? Or am I going crazy?”

“That’s what it looked like.”

They stared at each other a few moments more before they were distracted by Mitch’s phone ringing. Kelly.

“What the heck was that?” Mitch didn’t bother to greet his sister. He was too tense.

“There was a lot of wind, and our power’s gone out.”

“A lot of wind! Did you see the funnel?”

“Bryon said he saw something like that pass in your direction. That’s why I called to see if you’re okay.”

“Other than a chook shed and veranda shredded and lost in space, and a sheet of iron smashed through the lounge room window, we’re just honkey dory.”

“What! Seriously?”

“I’ve never seen a tornado, but that’s what it looked like, and that’s what it sounded like as it went over.”

“The rain’s started here now, and it sounds like it’s going to go through the roof. I better go and make sure everything is all right. The kids only just got home from school.”

“Stay safe. I don’t think the storm was heading your way, but who knows how much rain will fall.”

“You stay safe as well. Did Charlie get home all right?”

“Only just. I don’t know if ‘all right’ is the best word to describe her, but she’s alive.”

“Is she okay, Mitch?”

“I’m okay,” Charlie said loud enough for Kelly to hear.

“Mitch. You make sure you take care of Charlie. Mitch?” Kelly’s tone was no nonsense. What was he supposed to say? They’d spent four weeks under the same roof and had hardly spoken to each other.
